Combining Lydiard lacing with a heel lock for lace-bite/shoelace pain

tips
A little over a year ago, the latest model of the shoe line I’d been running in since 2017 (the Asics GT-2000) had its tongue changed from plush to very thin and minimal. I started having pain on the tops of my feet that made running and even everyday shoe wear very uncomfortable. It turns out this is irritation of the tibialis anterior or extensor tendons in the feet and is called “lace bite” among hockey players and runners.
Histamine in endurance training

It’s the end of July on the east coast, so the running conditions most mornings are hot, soupy, and…giving me hives? I often notice a few hives on my arms and upper back post-run, so when I stumbled upon this recent paper from John Halliwill’s group at the University of Oregon, I was curious to learn more about the role of histamine in running.

I’m finally in the return to run phase of my ITBS! This post recaps the many mistakes I made while trying to return to running early on in my ITBS and the ITBS-specific return to run plan I eventually found and followed once the pain settled and I was able to start making solid progress.
Digging in to my Garmin running dynamics data for 2024
running
stats
In 2024, I ran a total of 2404.7 miles over 338 days. The shape of my year was driven by two marathon training cycles: a 16-week cycle for the Eugene Marathon at the end of April (4/28/24), and an 18-week cycle for the Richmond Marathon held in November (11/16/2024).
A collection of IT Band Syndrome strategies
injury
Thanks to my IT band, it has been 9 weeks since I have gone on a real run. My IT band syndrome (ITBS) started suddenly - there was no warning period where runs repeatedly started to hurt after a set amount of time or distance. One day, a short, easy run was slightly uncomfortable from the onset, and afterward I had severe knee pain on my first (and only) step down a flight of stairs. After 9 weeks of spinning my wheels I think I am possibly, agonizingly slowly emerging from this pit of despair and want to catalog the approaches that I’ve tried.
